The idea was dropped likely because they didn’t want Evans to win the Smackdown title (at the time, Asuka held the belt) nor did they want Evans to lose since the company has “big plans” for her.
With a likely feud against Becky Lynch on the horizon, WWE obviously still sees big potential in Evans and Meltzer noted that they are pushing her due to her background and her ability to speak and connect with the general public.
